    DEF Program Update
API’s Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Certification Program licenses products that satisfy the requirements of the most recent and applicable edition of ISO 22241, Diesel engines – NOx reduction agent AUS 32, and samples products available in the marketplace to ensure they meet the standards and comply with API program requirements. API-licensed marketers are granted the right to display the API Diesel Exhaust Fluid Certification Marks on or in conjunction with their API-licensed products. As marketers, apply for licenses, they should keep the following points in mind:

The marketer name on the product or described online or in product literature must match the marketer name on the API license.

The brand name of the licensed product must be consistent with the information on the API license.

API licenses are not transferrable, and API-licensed oil marketers are not permitted to issue sublicenses to their customers. Only API can issue licenses to use the API Diesel Exhaust Fluid Certification Mark and API Marine Diesel Exhaust Fluid Certification Mark.

A licensed DEF marketer may produce and package a product for another marketer, but that product must be either (1) licensed separately by API or (2) carry a statement such as “produced by marketer X for marketer Y.” In the latter instance, the brand name shall be included on marketer X’s license.

For marketers that may have more than one DEF supplier, API requires the marketer to obtain their own license.  API does not allow one marketer’s brand to appear on multiple API licenses.
